She had an uncanny ability to coax out my intelligence and potential when I was doubtful that I had what it takes to get into a top school. Despite my lackluster career, college grades, and community involvement, my advisor helped me build a compelling case for why I should be offered a seat. Hard to believe, I know. But because she worked with me with patience, creativity and determination, I grew able to write and talk about my experiences with humble confidence. As important, I developed a career-changing narrative with the help of my advisor that excited me and fit great with the one school I wanted to get admitted into. I think that’s why UNC accepted me.
