John Shaw

John Shaw takes great pleasure in helping people achieve their education objectives and advance their careers. In his MBA admissions advisory capacity, John draws on his career experience in executive-level marketing roles, as well his educational background: a BA in English and Economics from Bowdoin College, and an MBA from Harvard Business School. With his deep strategy and branding acumen, as well as writing and editing skills, John helps his Square One clients find their distinct voices and optimally position themselves with business school admissions committees.

In addition to his strong track record with Square One, John has built a successful tech-based career. After taking Summa Four public, John helped lead the sale of the company to Cisco Systems, forming one of the major building blocks of Cisco's billion dollar Voice-over-IP product line. Most recently, in his capacity as CMO of ORSYP Software, John helped orchestrate the sale of the company to Automic Software, forming one of the world’s largest IT Automation companies. Previously, he was the COO of VBrick Systems, the leading worldwide provider of Enterprise Streaming Video solutions, and CEO of Aptima, a provider of Predictive Analytics software and services.

Along with his MBA admissions advisory work, John consults with companies regarding their marketing and product strategies, and serves as a board member of Community Action Partners – a group of HBS graduates who provide pro-bono consulting to Boston-area non-profits. Recent projects include Junior Achievement (addressing work readiness for ~10 million students/year), uAspire (helping students navigate the financing of higher education), and the Boston Philharmonic Orchestra (creating a 5-year strategic plan).

Never one to sit still, John loves golf, skiing, tennis and ice hockey.
